Of the hundreds of companies I meet in any given country, I only write about a handful. Sometimes it’s the ones that seem to be copying a US idea, but in reality are building their company in a completely unique—and frequently more profitable—way. Other times, I’m captivated by an idea that’s perfect for an emerging market, but probably wouldn’t work in the US.
But every once in a while I find a company that hits the trifecta: It’s addressing a big problem locally, it’s something I don’t think is offered in the US, and…. I want it. And when a product in undeveloped, chaotic, messy India can make someone in Silicon Valley feel jealous, you know that entrepreneur has come up with something good.

Did you read that big Ad on almost every news paper saying “Blue collects 100 Crores in revenue”? And, more importantly did you read the same movie’s review on any newspaper or website? Quite contrasting. Right? Call it a normal phenomena or astute strategy but this has surely taken toll on almost every new Bollywood [...]

I arrived in a muggy but cool Hyderabad, India this evening, for the World Newspaper Congress, organized by the newly merged WAN & IFRA orgs, now grandly called World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers. The venue and the conference seems to be chaotic this first night, not unlike the state of the newspaper industry these days. At a beautiful and lavish dinner spread, a great song and dance routine put up to showcase a lot of different art forms of India. Makes you wonder if they could have saved a small newspaper with the money being spent on this. Of course, I am a beneficiary of that money spend: I am speaking Wednesday on, what else, entrepreneurial journalism, and they are paying for my T&E. So chalk me down as the one person helping newspapers die. And if you’ve been following my recent Twitter dustups with MSM journos on crediting and stealing our stories, you would understand why my tears of sorrow at their demise are quickly drying up.
But I rib in jest. Important issues and topics being discussed about an important industry, by currently-important people. Follow my tweets and coverage on the site here; the hastag on Twitter is #WAN. Also WAN’s excellent official blog about the conf is here.
